Aikido'ss founder, Morihei Ueshiba O Sensei combined elements of traditional Japanese martial arts, transforming deadly fighting systems into an 'sArt of Peace.'s On this DVD, Saotome Sensei demonstrates and explains the sword movements on which many of Aikido'ss empty hand techniques rest. After discussing the basics of grip and stance, he illuminates some fundamental principles of Samurai swordsmanship, offers a sequence of bokken suburi (simple exercises with a wooden sword), and then demonstrates the 15 kurnitachi (complex patterns for two) that are the heart of his sword instruction. (The first 5 kumitachi, which Saotoine Sensei regards as basic, are explained in detail.) There is something here for all who are interested in Aikido and Japanese swordsmanship from advanced students to those who simply enjoy its efficiency, elegance, and beauty. Mitsugi Saotome is the chief instructor of the Aikido Shobukan Dojo in Washington, D.C. and also serves as the supervisory instructor for more than 70 affiliated dojo of the international association, Aikido Schools of Ueshiba. He began as a special apprentice with the founder of Aikido, Ueshiba Morihei in 1955 and continued for 15 years until the founder'ss death in April of 1969. From 1960 until 1975 Master Saotome taught at the World Aikido Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, where he held the highly respected position of senior instructor. In 1975 Master Saotome decided to come to the United States. When asked why, he responded: 'sThe goal of Aikido and O Sensei'ss dream is that all the peoples of the world live together as one family, in harmony with each other and their environment. The United States has the opportunity to set a great example.'s
