Rites of Passage, a 2 DVD set, is a documentary delving deep behind the scenes of the explosive world of No Holds Barred Fighting. DVD 1 Disc 1 kicks off with the superb quote from Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido: 'sAt the instant a warrior confronts a foe, all things come into focus.'s From there a mean dose of thrilling and exhilarating clips and highlights from some of MMA'ss greatest battles is launched. Chapter 2 encompasses the somewhat secret lives of the Brothers Inoue, Enson and Egan. The two warriors, so alike yet so different, come together in such a way that it'ss essentially a true-to-life Ying and Yang. The gladiator salute, 'sThose who are about to die salute you,'s launches the next epic chapter where Razak and his crew track tough guy Phil Ensminger on his journey from Metal Mulisha'ss proving grounds to Brazil where he competes in the World Vale Tudo Championships. Fans of MMA who haven'st had the fortunes of witnessing Brazil'ss baddest event should definitely scoop up Rites of Passage for that reason alone. The lengthy fourth chapter dedicated to UFC Japan II but primarily focused on Eugene Jackson and Kevin Randleman is arguably the gem of the documentary. Razak takes you immensely deep behind the curtains and into the minds of Jackson and Randleman. What'ss even better than the backstage stuff is the fact that you can witness scenes from UFC Japan II, a somewhat hard to find event due to it not being available in stores or readily buyable on mainstream pay per view when it was held. DVD 2 Disc 2 has one of the best chapters of the documentary. Entitled Underdogs: MMA in Belfast, this is the true grit underworld of MMA. Traveling to a slightly rundown town in Ireland, the lives of Irish fighter Thomas Lamont and his team are detailed tremendously. From there, Rites of Passage showcases the private life of Ron Waterman and then leads into a full blown chapter focused on Randleman and his quest to win the UFC heavyweight title, only to lose it to Randy Couture. After the lengthy piece solely centered on Randleman, the final true chapter of the DVD focuses briefly on Mark Coleman during the finals of the PRIDE Grand Prix. Finally, the viewer can choose to watch some commercials from TapOut, Sinister Clothing, Crave Entertainment and the Beverly Hills Jiu Jitsu... Rites of Passage is filmmaking perfection!
