On this DVD, Saotome Sensei explains the use of the staff (jo) as a training tool for Aikido. After discussing basic jo movements and exercises, Saotome Sensei offers a sequence of six 'skumijo's (complex patterns for two), each with several variations. Detailed menus allow instant navigation to each of the forms and variations. The disc also includes ten of Saotome Sensei'ss 'spatrol kata's (paired forms with the long staff), an interview on weapons training, and several spontaneous demonstrations. There is something here for all who are interested in Aikido and Japanese staff movement - from advanced students to those who simply enjoy its efficiency, elegance, and beauty. Mitsugi Saotome is the chief instructor of the Aikido Shobukan Dojo in Washington, D.C. and also serves as the supervisory instructor for more than 70 affiliated dojo of the international association, Aikido Schools of Ueshiba. He began as a special apprentice with the founder of Aikido, Ueshiba Morihei in 1955 and continued for 15 years until the founder'ss death in April of 1969. From 1960 until 1975 Master Saotome taught at the World Aikido Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, where he held the highly respected position of senior instructor. In 1975 Master Saotome decided to come to the United States. When asked why, he responded: 'sThe goal of Aikido and O Sensei'ss dream is that all the peoples of the world live together as one family, in harmony with each other and their environment. The United States has the opportunity to set a great example.'s
