Here Saotome Sensei, a direct student of Aikido'ss legendary founder, explains a level of training beyond ordinary Aikido practice: takemusu aiki. At this higher level, attention shifts away from the details of technique to 'smartial situations's and toward moments of vulnerability that Saotome Sensei calls 'srisk points.'s With this focus, the training develops the ability to perceive other people clearly and to respond to their movements with definite, appropriate decisions. Mitsugi Saotome is the chief instructor of the Aikido Shobukan Dojo in Washington, D.C. and also serves as the supervisory instructor for more than 70 affiliated dojo of the international association, Aikido Schools of Ueshiba. He began as a special apprentice with the founder of Aikido, Ueshiba Morihei in 1955 and continued for 15 years until the founder'ss death in April of 1969. From 1960 until 1975 Master Saotome taught at the World Aikido Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, where he held the highly respected position of senior instructor. In 1975 Master Saotome decided to come to the United States. When asked why, he responded: 'sThe goal of Aikido and O Sensei'ss dream is that all the peoples of the world live together as one family, in harmony with each other and their environment. The United States has the opportunity to set a great example.'s While the DVD stands on its own, it is also part of a series that includes The Principles of Aikido, The Sword of Aikido, The Staff of Aikido, Two Swords of Aikido, and Oyo Henka: Aikido Constructive Use of Resistance.
