'Karate-do, as we understand it today, is, for the most part, the product of a synthesis which has taken place over the centuries. Various methods of Chinese boxing blended with the indigenous system of Okinawan self-defense known as Te, and through constant refinement by generations of great practitioners, classical karate was born. Kata are the formal exercises of classical karate. Formulated in geometrical patterns, they consist of various sequences of physical techniques both defensive and offensive against imaginary adversaries, beginning and ending on the same spot (embusen) with a gesture of courtesy (rei). The kata of classical karate are the means by which the ancient karate practitioners have transmitted their knowledge and secrets down through the generations to the present day. Kata are the reason the philosophical martial way of karate-do still exists and thrives.'' -Patrick McCarthy. Patrick McCarthy is recognized worldwide as one of the foremost authorities on the civil fighting traditions of Okinawa. He is also the first Caucasian to ever be awarded the coveted Kyoshi 7th Dan Teacher's License from Kyoto's prestigious Dai Nippon Butokukai. He has been practicing karate-do for over thirty years, and has also studied Taijiquan, White Crane, Hung Gar, Monk Fist, and Five Ancestors Fist gongfu. During the mid-seventies, while pursuing a successful competitive career, he started his research on the arts. This has brought him not only to Japan, but also Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the People's Republic of China. With an extensive background in both the Okinawan and Chinese fighting arts, McCarthy was in a unique position to research the most profound and influential document in the history of karate-do, the Bubishi. Since that time, he has interviewed and trained with the world's top masters of gongfu and karate-do while unraveling the history of this document and the fighting systems associated with it. In 1987 established the International Ryukyu Karate Research Society (IRKRS) as an outgrowth of his research. 1.
