No volume on kicking technique would be complete without a discussion of the tools which the body uses when kicking, specifically muscles, ligaments, tendons and cartlidge. Without some understanding of how all of these body components interrelate, it is impossible to utilize them to their maximum. A common myth in training is that if you want to improve a specific kick, figure out which is the most important muscle to that kick and work on developing that muscle. Equally as important as knowing about the muscles, ligaments, tendons and cartlidges involved in kicking is to understand how their flexibilities vary, and what you can do to increase it. To the physically active person, a good stretching program will enable their body to operate more efficiently, leading to improved performance and fewer injuries. It is for this reason that so much attention is spent on various stretching techniques throughout this book that will help the connective tissues as well as the muscles. Master Cho was born in Korea and began studying Tang Soo Do at the age of ten. At the age of twenty-one and already a fourth degree black belt, Master Cho was chosen to teach self-defense to the Korean Army. After his military service, Master Cho traveled to India and Germany where he taught servicemen the art of weaponless combat. Traveling with a demonstration team to the United States he decided to stay. As a tournament competitor, Master Cho has won more than twenty-five championships around the world.
