Wadoryu karate was founded by Sensei Hironori Otsuka (1892-1982) and it has become one of the most popular styles in the world. In this book virtually all techniques of Wado-karate are taken up, and therefore forms a unique document for practitioners of this style. Together with the other book which mainly deals with the nine official kata, the whole curriculum up to black belt (and beyond) has become available. This book also seems to be the first which uses physical terms to explain karate techniques. Ohgami feels the scientific approach is necessary to develop the art of karate. Shingo Ohgami (Japan, 1941) started training karate in 1960 when he entered Tokyo University where Sensei Hironori Ohtsuka was the instructor of the karate club. Shortly after arriving in Sweden, he started a karate club which grew to such a proportion that he decided to give up a career in chemistry and has been engaged in teaching karate fulltime since 1972. He was graded to 5th dan black belt by Sensei Otsuka in 1974. Other than karate his interest spreads to laido, Jodo, Aikido, Ryukyu Kobudo and Taichi Chuan. He is a member of the Japanese Budo Academy. WHAT IS KARATE?
