Las Vegas. January 31, 2004. UFC 46: Supernatural. In the main event, Couture vs Belfort, ended before it really began, with Randy suffering a cut eye. Like the champion he is, there was no complaining and no excuses. Though the main event was a let-down, the same cannot be said of the undercard! Britain'ss great MMA hope Lee Murray makes his debut in the UFC against the tough Jorge Rivera, fresh from K.O.-ing the legendary Pele Landi in his last outing. (Note Murray also K.O.'sd Tito Ortiz outside a London nightclub in a street-brawl following UFC 38). This is the most beautiful 'striangle arm-bar's in history! A real fascinating match-up is between lightweight star BJ Penn and the unstoppable Matt Hughes. Hughes the most dominant fighter in the welterweight division, Penn the uncrowned king of the lightweight division. And BJ Penn brings along his jiu-jitsu instructor, Renato 'sCharuto's Verissimo, who faces former Champion Carlos Newton. Carlos is a very experienced, elite fighter, while Renato has had only four fights in MMA, but Renato is a BJJ world champ. Good fight and one of the fighters almost gets knocked out. And in the now obligatory grudge match, Frank Mir gets the chance to avenge the stomps he received from the slightly deranged, but always entertaining Wes Sims at UFC 43. Simms has the uncanny ability to avoid submissions, which he showed to good effect here. Mir was the better submissions guy, better striker, but still had a real hard time with Simms. While the grudge matches always add a bit of flavour, it'ss good to see in the end two fighters depart the octagon with mutual respect. St. Pierre vs Parysian - Good fight. Parysian was the more technical grappler, but St Pierre was the better striker, and overall much stronger physically. Franca vs Thompson - another pretty good fight. Thopson was the agressor on the feet and the more technical striker, Franca was the agressor on the ground and has more power in his fists. Serra vs Curran - Serra consistently overpowered the lighter Curran. Overall, fewer submission attempts than you would expect in a fight between two BJJ black belts. Ever since UFC 40 the quality of cards put together by Zuffa has been of a very high standard, and actually UFC 46 bursts of high quality fights!
