This two-volume series on the major karate-styles of Okinawa was originally filmed and produced in Japan. This first DVD starts with a short introduction on the history of karate, after which the three styles are introduced. First the extremely hard Uechi-Ryu style, with masters no less than Toyama Seiko 10th Dan Hanshi, Shinjo Kyohide 8th Dan Kyoshi, and Shinjo Narihiro 7th Dan Kyoshi. Presented are all kinds of devastating techniques and Sanchin kata and Sanseiryu kata. Then Goju-Ryu with Tensho kata and various punching techniques as well as kumite. Watch the masters of Goju Senaha Shigetoshi 9th Dan Hanshi and Hokama Tetsuhiro 9th Dan Hanshi. Finally the lighter Shorin-Ryu style with Onaga Yoshimitsu 9th Dan Hanshi and Onaga Michiko 7th Dan Kyoshi. Demonstrated are kata Tenshin, makiwara training, Irikumi and some sparring. This documentary is not only interesting for practitioners of the respective styles, but for anyone interested in the roots of karate. You'll be amazed! The bonus includes a demonstration of Okinawan masters on the Paris-Bercy Festival 1996.
