AKA Cassius Clay is an in-depth documentary about the life and times of legendary boxing great Muhammad Ali. The film charts Ali s rise from childhood in Louisville, Kentucky, through Olympic gold in Rome in 1960, to winning the world heavyweight crown with the defeat of Sonny Liston in 1964, when aged only 21. This fight began the trend of taunting and teasing an opponent, something that continues to this day. Made in 1970, by Jim Jacobs and Bill Cayton, the film uses Jacobs' vast boxing archive to good effect, and features some excellent (and funny!) footage of Ali talking and arguing with the legendary trainer Cus D Amato, the trainer of Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson. One interesting point is that during the Ali-Louis debate D'amato feel's that Ali would lose to Joe Louis since he apparently believed that Ali didn't have a great chin, when in actuality Ali regained the title because even though his speed was gone his chin was so good that the big sluggers like Frazier and Foreman couldn't put him out. It gives a brief and interesting glimpse at the impact of Ali's conversion to Islam. The late Malcolm X gives his opinion about Ali, the champ meets one of his childhood heroes from Hollywood, comedian Stepin Fetchit and It goes into the ''Phantom Punch'' controversy. And of course much rare fight footage, not only of Ali, but also of Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano, Floyd Patterson, Jerry Quarry and the controversial knockdown of Sonny Liston. Ali's bout with Henry Cooper, where Ali was knocked down for the first time by Cooper's left hook, is included in some length, though Clay went on to win in the fifth round. It's amazing that after watching the documentary you feel that the future look's hopeless for Ali, while what comes after is the regaining of his license, his victory in the Supreme Court and the over turning of his conviction, and his regaining of the Heavy Weight Championship! If you want to get a glimpse at how amazing Ali's comeback was, continue watching with the documentary 'Rumble in the Jungle' and you'll see what a monumental achievement it was for Ali to regain the title.
